As far as I know, the Google AdSense on Google Maps was available just for a short period of time for "bucket testing". eDirectory was implemented to use Google Maps as it is now, without runescape accounts ads.
I am assuming you saw these ads on the maps working somewhere. Can you please link it for us?

Hey Rick,

Any luck getting more reviews? I wonder what works. I never tried to get reviews on a website before. Maybe having a button on the menu saying "Write Reviews" ? Link to a page telling people why reviews are helpful and asking them to contribute a review if they have visited one? But I just looked at your site and I had trouble even finding a review option. I clicked on one of the featured ones and didn't see a review option so maybe others have a similar problem

Our site is http://eatlocalgrown.com. We are getting lots of visitors but we've had very few people write reviews.

In our welcome email to the owners of new listings, we suggest that they ask one of their good customers to help them out by writing a review. So far, this tactic has not been successful.

What are some of successful strategies that you have used to get visitors to write more Reviews?

Here's an example of a field you already have associated with an html editor:

In your articles section for example: http://demodirectory.com/sitemgr/article/article.php?id=7&screen=&letter=

If you scroll down and see the Content section, you've implemented the html editor for the content field in the articles area. This is not showing up as an option that I see in the Listings fields, and the two that it would make most sense to have this feature would be Description and Location.

Hi JohnF, thanks for the response. Let me try to clarify my question for you. I have a client on an earlier version of edirectory. One of the features that was lacking in the earlier versions (I think they are on version 6) or so, is that the site mgr fields do not allow any html in the description or locations fields. The locations field is just a text field right now as is the description field in the site mgr. This means that if the system admin or the client wants to include html ie: links in the description and/or locations fields they cannot.

What I'm asking is that in your newer versions is this feature included and if not, could it be added. I think it would be an easy fix, just asking if it has been implemented yet.

http://demodirectory.com/sitemgr/listing/listing.php?id=53519&screen=&letter=
If you click there and edit a listing and then scroll down to after where it says Attach additional files you can see that you have a tab area for the language selection and then just simple text fields:

Ie: Summary Description
Description
Keywords for the search
Hours of Work
Location

It would certainly make your product much better if you had an html editor functionality for at least the two fields named

Description and Location in this section

Does that help clarify what I'm asking? Again, many thanks for the help.

From the sitemgr, go to SETTINGS and look for
E-Mail Notifications
.

Scroll down to
New Listing
and click edit.

I chose to leave that email with the default text. The one that I customize is
Active Listing
, this is the email that is sent after you approve the new listing. Here is the text that I use in the email body:

Your listing is live and active on EDIRECTORY_TITLE

LISTING_DEFAULT_URL/

WHAT TO DO NEXT?

We have found that a lot of the people that visit websites like ours are pretty shy when it comes to being active on the site. It's kind of like those awkward middle school dances where no one wanted to be the first to dance!

To help them get over this shyness, sometimes you have to help 'break the ice' as they say!

If possible, reach out to a loyal customer and ask them to WRITE A REVIEW on your new listing. While they are there, get them to hit the "LIKE" button for FACEBOOK.

This will do a couple of things-

1. When a new person sees your listings, they can read the review. People are MUCH more likely to write their own review when they see another one already published.

2. Whenever someone clicks the 'LIKE' button for Facebook, a post will show up on their personal Facebook page. This post will have a link that goes back to YOUR listing! Basically, it's a referral from a friend, generally the best kind you can get!

OKAY, WHAT ELSE?

Add lots of PICTURES. We all know that they 'tell a thousand words'. And it's true. Listing with more pics have a much better chance of turning a viewer into a customer.

How about VIDEO? If you have one, put it up there! If you get stuck, just ask for help.

To see a pretty good example of this, check out the listing for Polyface Farms:
http://eatlocalgrown.com/listing/polyface-4ebcd15255e54.html

That's it for now. Please reach out if you have any questions!

Thank you for being a member of the EDIRECTORY_TITLE!

Regards

We have a dedicated server with 2gb of ram. Every non-edirectory page of our website takes 2-3 seconds to load (maximum). After we installed the edirectory software, all of our pages load just as quick. However, when we try to access any edirectory page on our website, (a) that page takes nearly a minute to load AND (b) the rest of our website pages take a very long time to load. I can't post the URL here, but has anyone had the same problem? Anyone know what could be the solution? Thanks!

I wonder if it is possible to have listing1 listing2 listing3 modules with their files on the website root and tables in the database

Hi Carlos,

I'm not sure if this is for you but it's partly related to the conversation. Could you indulge me with some feedback?

I was looking at the listing types here: http://demodirectory.com/sitemgr/listingtemplate/index.php - it's a great, great idea. I wish some other directory company did this. I looked at the link to the manual above and it shows the ability to change the colors on the types but I don't see this anymore. Will this be a feature in the future?

I was playing around with the types and was hoping eDirectory would improve upon it more in the next version with a couple ideas for a few reasons. That led me to look at how ratings work and I have some small ideas for those too.

1) Ratings are really important. Hard to get but important. But they are always in the bottom right corner on all the templates. See where they show up here http://demodirectory.com/sitemgr/listingtemplate/template.php?id=6&screen=&letter=
Search engines don't look down there as much and people can't even see them unless they scroll way down on the page. Maybe others disagree but I don't know why. It would be great if the sitemgr could control this better, including the default types which I don't think can be controlled anywhere.

2) Click thrus are important. It would be great if the sitemanager or listing owner could choose if a rating can appear on the result view of a listing. A good rating will help drive traffic. Maybe even allow a member picture to appear on the result page. Cute girls cause guys to click thru.

3) When clicking on rating stars make it go somewhere. Right now people need to click on "1 review". Even if there are no stars take the person to a place to make a rating. (The rating popup sucks btw, why scroll in a popup?!?! and why aren't required fields labeled? ) Get a prettier capcha method too? Who wants to use a website that doesn't look up to date because of weird looking captcha method?

4) Allow someone to rate without an account, but after creating a review ask them if they want to be notified when someone comments on their comment. Why? Because THEN people will be happy to signup and make an account. I get buy-in and then they can add a profile with their picture if they want. No one really wants to have to go through the signup process before making a rating. Ratings are valuable and the harder it is to make a rating the less of them my company gets.

lastly a couple small ideas, for the sitemgr, I would gain some sanity if some small tweaks to the searches were done:

#5) After I search for some listings, for example, if I get no results, I have go back to the prior page and all of my selections are now gone. I have to type everything in again, remember what I finally selected, and try the search again with some modifications. Can't the fields and dropdowns remember what was there? Once I find my search results, if I have 10 of them, and I want to make some changes, can there be the option to save it and automatically go to the edit page of the next listing? Otherwise it's Click Save, Click Edit, Click Save, Click Edit. It would be so much faster if it were Save & Next, Save & Next, etc if I had just done a search.

#6) On the main Listing manage page, could a keyword search field be added there? Why the need to click to a search page unless it is an advanced search? Just show: Results for: Golf (so I remember what I searched for) and ask me if I want to edit my search or start a new search. If I want to edit the search just insert the Advanced Search fields with what I just typed in above the results and let me edit it.

On the search, I just realized, 3 problems for users:

#7) The new search is cool. I like the Auto-Population of the location. It looks like the search dropdown actually saves cities searched in the past too. It would be nice if it didn't always show United States of America or the country name. And A) instead of making users use their delete button in the Where field each time, allow them to X out the current location (or keyword) without having to use a backspace and THEN type in what they want. B) SAVE that location so the user never has to type it in again unless they want to change it. Right now if people delete the default search location they need to delete the location again if they do another listing search or go to a different module. Always save the last location.

#8) Ok, if I just searched by category by clicking on a category name I get results like this http://demodirectory.com/listing/guide/food-and-dining But what if I only want to see restaurants in San Francisco? Currently the user has to go back to the search and add the category name as a keyword and add a city. Instead, can the user have the option of:
Search results in category Food and Dining [refine results by city/location]. It wouldn't be hard at all. You could even add some small text "Recently searched Locations: Dallas, San Francisco (from the cities the user had previously typed in the location search field)

#9) Small but easy: If I have some search results like this: http://demodirectory.com/listing/guide/food-and-dining
and I select Order by Ratings http://demodirectory.com/listing/guide/food-and-dining/orderby/rating , and then select Coffee Shops it currently goes to http://demodirectory.com/listing/guide/food-and-dining/coffee-shops but it would be so much better if it remembered the last Order By request and went here: http://demodirectory.com/listing/guide/food-and-dining/coffee-shops/orderby/rating

The better the user experience the more we can sell, the more directories we can setup. I know this is a lot but I don't think it is hard. Any feedback on this?

Thanks

yeah, I agree. I would be great to allow a comparison or even allow checking of boxes to add or remove items from a search. Like restaurants, it would be great to search for restaurants in a city and then check the types of food you want to see what is available. Italian (4), Thai (3), Burger Joints (10), Steak (3), American (15). I just want to do one search and then check and uncheck boxes to expand or contract the results list. I don't want my users to have to go forward and back pages. They hate that. That would be a cool feature that could be used for other segments too. Just check a main category to use a different type of results page that allows for checking and unchecking on the side instead of always clicking on a subcategory and not liking the results and then going back to the first page to click on a different subcategory. What a pain in the ass. I'm not complaining mind you. This is a great product. I just want them to pick up the pace and get some great new features and tweaks for owners and users. Then I would really consider a site revamp and have them upgrade me and do a bunch more stuff.

Hey Jinjacko,

I don't have this on my directory but I think this new version has what you want. Look in site content in the sitemanager and then Navigation Configuration.

Oh no man, an email list serv newsletter? This is a directory. Can't you just use constant contact or something? Just insert some of their code somewhere and use it. No way edirectory can compete with constant contact - make the directory software better, forget about building new software from scratch and adding it. They already have some plugins here. Maybe they can add a feature to plugin constant contact or something. That would remove a small thorn from my side. Sync new members from Constant Contact would be so nice so you don't have to do it but don't ask them to build a program from new. Like, do you want them to build excel so you can import your listings?

Totally agree here. Did this ever get done? I heard about this and how important it is. It would totally make it easier for google to find my site. More site visits, more $.

I don't know where it is. I can't find it but it's probably easy.and I'm just having a brain fart. I think you used to be able to edit it in the sitemanager but I can't find it anymore. Anyone know what happened? I see how to make a new site theme, which is pretty damn cool. Settings > Theme but I wish there were a preview option. Can't a guy test out the colors together first before making it live? I mean, who publishes a magazine and then looks to see what it looks like afterward? Do I have to take down the site first to test it out? My advertisers would kill me.

Kathy,

This makes no sense to me what you are asking. Sorry. Addresses are dropdown fields. Choose a country, then it shows the states/provinces in that country, and then you select the cities in that country. If you remove the dropdown fields it would be a mess. Why would they want to do that?

Hi
Is there a way to include a listing TYPE in top navigation and display the featured listings, browe by category and reviews exactly like listing
Example instead of havine HOME----LISTINGS
I want to have HOME---DOCTORS----DENTISTS-----
Knowing that DOCTORS and DENTISTS are two different listing types with different fields and templates
Under DOCTORS , I want to get Featured doctors and browse by category and reviews for doctors
The same thing under DENTISTS
Thanks
